The Pontiac Firebird Formula became part of the General Motor's Pontiac Division's Firebird line from 1970 until 1981 and then again from 1985 until 2002. The Pontiac Firebird Formula featured a bigger engine than the basic Firebird as well as different wheel and interior options.

In 1967, General Motor's Pontiac Division created the Firebird for competition with Chevrolet's Camaro and Ford's Mustang. The first generation of Firebird, 1967 to 1969, did not include the Firebird Formula.

In the second generation of the Firebird, the Formula featured bigger motors with more horsepower and torque. When the Firebird Formula returned to the line-up during the latter years of the third generation and all of the fourth generation, it featured bigger motors, bigger wheels and better interior options.

During the second generation of the Firebird, the Formula could be identified by the "twin-scooped" hood. During the Formula's run in the third generation of Firebird, and throughout the fourth generation (1993 to 2002), it could be identified by its "Power Bulge" hood, markings on each side of the body and it's rear spoiler.

During the latter years of the second generation of Firebird, the number of Formula Trans Ams sold increased with the release of the popular Burt Reynolds movie "Smokey and The Bandit."

The Pontiac Firebird Formula began with the second generation of Firebird from 1970 to 1981. During the third generation of Firebird from 1982 to 1992, the Formula returned in 1987. The fourth and final generation included the Formula from 1993 to 2002.
